Cape Town Day 3

Day 3!

We left for our day at around 9:15 this morning after breakfast. We first headed over to Table Mountain. If it is a clear day the view from the top of the mountain is just amazing from what I have heard. We made the hour drive into the heart of Cape Town and to the mountain to find that it was closed! To get to the top of the mountain you ride in a cable car but it is very windy here right now so the cable cars are not going up. We have heard that the earliest they believe they will open is Sunday. We are hoping to fit it in yet before we leave but this wind must stop for that to happen. After our quick trip to Table Mountain we got back in the car and drove to Stellenbosch, wine country. We headed over to Spier Vineyard and spent a good part of the day there. We first got lunch at Eight restaurant. It was very good. We then headed to get more details about the vineyard tours. We found out that the tours are done on Segways. We talked it over and although a few of us were nervous about the Segway thing we decided to go on a one-hour tour. We met our guide, Prince and got the Segway driving lessons. We all passed and were ready to go after about 20ish minutes. It did not take long to get the hang of the Segway and we quickly grew to love them. We are brainstorming how we can get a few at the house so that we can cruise town on them in Joburg. For the tour we saw a small bit of the land and vineyards that Spier has. It was fun to be in the vineyard and sampling the grapes right off the vines. Sadly we had to turn in our Segways and the tour had to end. We then decided to do a little wine and chocolate tasting because why not and we are at a vineyard after all. It was a lot of fun. After that we just walked around the property for a little while before calling it a day. We could have spent so much more time just exploring this one vineyard. It turned out to be a great and relaxing day. For the ride home we decided to take the coast. We had seen many pictures of these colorful hut looking things all over and really wanted to see them. On the drive home we found them! They turned out to be changing rooms on St. James Beach but they sure are fun and great to take pictures of. After our little detour we finished our drive home by stopping at McDonalds for dinner. Hey, vacation is not complete without some fast food right?!? It was a great day but not without adventure. Between our GPS, a map and asking directions so far we have made it to all of our destinations but it took a few stops to make it to Stellenbosch. We just play the American tourist card every time. We have also discovered that our car does not reverse very well. This could prove to be a bit of a problem but we are problem solvers. We were making it just fine by drifting backwards out of parking spots in neutral. It can be slow but it works! Well today one of the places we parked was not on a hill of any kind and we did not move backwards, so we had to push the car. This happened twice more during the day and the last two times a few guys came to help us. At this point it is just plain funny to us and second nature to push the car. Driving in South Africa will always mean something new! We have many more adventures booked for the weekend. Many of them most of you will be surprised that I am doing, I am surprised myself but I just keep saying this is a once in a lifetime chance so why not. Can’t wait to share about them soon!
